The neorats predicted before the oil wars began that this whole effort would cost the taxpayers 1.7 billion, the latest estimate is 500 billion, just for Iraq! Maybe if the oil wars had cost 1.7 billion, then the 18.5 billion offered by by China to buy the afghan pipeline and it's owner Unocal would be considered a neorat version of a good deal? The way to make sure any gain in wider credibility for global climate disaster from CO2 emmissions actually creates momentum behind real solutions (like renewable energy and conservation through a change to quality of life versus quantity of consumption and possesions), rather than boosting nuclear power and "clean" coal, is to keep on emphasizing the real cost of nuclear waste and coal pollution.

Are US soldiers statistics, measured in percentages as the generals speak of them, or as human beings, who ought not be asked to fight and die for oil? Oil is a commodity it can be replaced with other energy sources, better, cleaner, cheaper sources. Those who die in these oil wars cannot be replaced. They are not a commodity. Rummy said to US troops who questioned him about the lack of armor and armored humvees, if a bomb has your name on it, there's no armor that will protect you. A general sitting next to him today says how wonderful it is that the return rate after being wounded for US troops in Iraq has risen 10% to 70%! So we have an estimate based upon real live analysis of existing solar power insdtallations: "...costs between a quarter and fifty cents..". That is per kwh.
A reduction in cost to 10 cents per kwh puts solar electric in sight of competition with present electric power available to homeowners.
As power costs double in the next few years due to fuel inflation a solar system at 10 cents per kwh would be a huge savings. Enough to allow families on fixed retirement incomes and decreasing earnings from low pay service jobs to afford ever increasing property taxes and mortgage costs?
So how is that cost best reduced? Nano tech materials research to increase the efficieny of solar cells? Well that's fine, but is vulnarable to the vagaries of corporate/government research ever reaching production.
Instigate mass markets creating mass production efficiencies to bring the cost of the solar cells down? This is more likely! That could cut the cost to 12.5 cents from 25 cents by itself. Witness the cost reduction in computer chips with mass production. It maybe even greater cost reduction over a longer time period.
But here's an unrealized low tech cost reduction.
In most areas solar cells only generate maximum power 1 out of every three days. And unless they have expensive, complicated tracking systems the light hitting the cells is diminished by a large percentage for about half of daylight hours.
Instead of maximum output from the cells for only half the day and on only one out of every three days, what if maximum cell output could be maintained everyday for say 80% of daylight hours?
Well then solar power would cost maybe 8 cents per kwh or less?
And no expensive or groundbreaking nano tech is needed to optimize the power output based on merely suppying the cells with maximum light in daylight, early or late, sunny or cloudy. only a different design for a collector, and that collector will produce heat as a byproduct.
Solar cogeneration. It's coming. Beware corporatist codgers, it's scary. Hehehey.
It's the kind of thing well suited for small business. Very threatening to mega power monopoloy compnies and interests.

This living without ownership of the land brings up an idea I have had.
I envision nature conservancy areas that feature large windpower systems that feed power back into the grid and at the same time provide low impact high tech camping for voluntarilly homeless people.
The wind power would pay the taxes and upkeep, and provide green energy for the residents.
Students, young families starting out, retirees traveling and camping, and just dedicated nature lovers could use these living areas to save money for school, to buy homes, or just to have a low energy and consumption impact on the environment.
Make homelessness voluntary and patriotic, saving energy for the good of all of US! And an added benefit is green energy for the national power grid and more land under conservation.
The impact on the land itself from camping could be minimized with portable platforms for tents that have built in wind electric heat, power, water, internet access, and bike/ski trails for physical access.
Electric buses with area for bikes and gear could provide access to and from the camping area to mass transportation, allowing car free living and travel.
Residents could even rent cars to go from area to area...cruising the country's natural beauty and staying in one area for days or years before moving on.
It's a radically low impact solution that many people would love!

Toyota is in the car business, GM in the oil powered car business. The EV1 was all electric, and stood still once the batteries needed charging. It was never introduced into the mass market. GM has a diesel hybrid that will never be manufacrured either. The toyota hybrids keep on going, but have limited mileage possibilities. Toyota could produce a plugin hybrid,with unlimited mileage on short trips and hybrid mileage on longer trips, but then oil monopoly duuhbyaist government would punish them. So toyota throws the oily dog a bone, offering to help GM and ford out with access to their hybrid powerplants. So just maybe plugin hybrids will be ok'ed someday? The plugin hybrid combines the all electric EV1 infinite mileage on short trips with the long range utility of the regulat toyota hybrid. Consumers are plugging in their own toyota hybrids by adding extra battery packs, but toyota warns that voids the warranty. If we want to elimiate imported oil over the next 10 years? Make plugin hybrids the standard vehicle for government employees on the job. It's not quite that unknowable odograph.
Were ethanol produced using crop and food waste, using wind and solar power, it would certainly compete without any credits.
But the administration's version of energy policy will not even do the easy step to save huge quantities of expensive blood-for-oil. They will not even push industry to use renewable energy to provide the heat energy needed to refine oil.
Or the obvious step of encouraging all biofuels, like ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, and methane to be produced using wind and solar power.
Instead oil based energy is used to grow corn, with diesel tractors and oil based fertilizer. Then that corn is processed using more fossil fuel and nuclear produced power. By the time the ethanol gets in your vehicle, twice the inported oil has been used to produce it as was "saved" by the biofuel process.
And all of this subsidized by pork barrels of debt.
On the other hand, with wind and solar powered processing, every source of biofuel in the waste stream could economiccally be turned into fuel that would replace imported blood-for-oil. Print Article

Antidote to GE "Ecomagination".

Have you seen the GE coalmining bikini team? That ad is part of a $90 million ad campaign touting their energy policy.

90 million might buy 9 20 megawatt wind machines instead, that produce electric power at 2 cents per kwh. This is the antidote to "ecomagination". An extrapolation from present wind power technology ..available from GE?!? ["GE's 3.6-megawatt wind turbines"] , based upon the economies of scale and mass production and installation.

The equivalent in nuclear power generation capacity could cost up to $450 million ($5 per watt of generating capacity)with an unknowable, astronomical cost for waste disposal along with it. To replace the steam turbines alone at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power site is estimated to cost 1 billion dollars! ["In 2004, Pacific Gas & Electric, a state regulated entity who operates the plant, applied to spend around a billion dollars to replace the steam generators there."]

Even one Chernobyl type incident adds an incalculable cost. How can a whole region destroyed by radioactive contamination even be valued in terms of money? There are accidents waiting to happen that could release up to 8 times the radioactive contamination of Chernobyl at each of 68 used nuclear fuel rod storage "pools" all over the US.

By court order the 18 billion collected from nuclear power consumers for waste disposal is evaporating to pay for those storage pool operations.

The cost for Yucca Mountain is maybe 50 billion? [who knows? It's top secret!] Now it seems it may be declared a temporay waste site, due to revelations of whistleblowers who quit their jobs to get around government gag orders on employees at the site. How many more permanent sites will be needed?

Now lobbyists for new nuclear power plants want more funds for more temporary sites until Yucca is done?

If one were to add up all the area polluted by mines, refineries, processing plants, waste sites, generating plants for fossil fuels and nuclear power, and the exponentially expanding plumes of toxins in groundwater, rivers, lakes, and air from these energy sources...

Then compare that to the 50 foot diameter tower footprint area needed for each of the 30,000 one thousand foot scale wind machines needed to equal the present electrical generating capacity of the US, 600,000 megawatts and climbing!

And consider not only rooftops for solar electric power, but also space over parking lots that need shading anyway. And solar cogeneration that produces not only electricity (which absorbs only 10% of the solar power available), but heating and cooling capacity and water/waste recycling or desalinization from the same collectors. Water is the oil of this century.

By substituting heat pumps for heating instead of fuel oil and natural gas, and hybrid plugin vehicles that use mostly electric power on short trips (the vast majority of driving miles), that electric capacity created by wind and solar power can substitute for expensive greenhouse gas emitting inported and other fossil fuels

For instance...20% of oil is burned to provide heat energy for refining oil, an ourtrageous waste. That needless combustion of imported oil ought to be replaced with a combination of clean solar heat and wind and solar electric power driving heat pumps. It should, at the very least, be done for US soldiers, fighting and dying for that "black gold".

But do we really need 30,000 20 megawatt wind machines on the high speed wind areas of the great plains? Yes, because a switch to heat pumps and hybrid plugin vehicles will require even more electric generating capacity.

With the added capacity from solar electric panels on rooftops, and over parking lots, wind and solar could economically replace fossil and nuclear power for transportation as well as heating, cooling,refining, and manufacturing.

The old fossil fuel plants would serve as backup and a kind of battery to smooth out variable output from wind and solar and variable loads in the power grid. Eventually they could be replaced by superconducting energy storage rings and maybe someday with fuel cells.

If hybrid plugin vehicles, that averaged 80 miles per gallon, were successful in capturing the US auto market, biofuels could replace most imported oil. As battery technology, backup generators, and eventually fuel cells increase in efficiency and drop in cost, those biofuels, like methanol, ethanol,and biodiesel could totally replace oil.

None of this is as farfetched as a nuclear plant with pebble bed or other research level technology ("next generation nuclear technology", the neoconman talking point phrase) actually overcoming the insurmountable problems of uninsurable risk for siting, fuel mining and manufacturing, and waste transportation, processing, and storage [20 to 30 tons per year per nuclear reactor].

Next generation nuclear power? What about pebble bed? The early design developed by a joint amercian/german team used graphite and silicon carbide coated fuel "pebbles" and hydrogen gas as the propellant for the power generating turbine.

Graphite!?! The neutron absorption material in the first nuclear reactor in that Chicago squash court under the University Stadium. It terrified the scientists working on the Manhattan Project, because graphite is essentially compressed coal. That is what was used at Chernobyl, and it helped feed the fire that spread the radioactive contamination.Can anyone guarantee the coating won't crack? How would one prove it? Decades of testing? That maybe too late.

A reactor that uses superheated hydrogen as a cooling element and propellant for the turbine? One infitesimal leak of that high pressure, superheated gas and its all over, those pebbles would be dust, scattered all over 3 states. The design has since swiched to using helium as the propellant.
Instead I'm proposing larger scale [3 times the size of the GE 3.6 megawatt machines], 20 megawatt, 1000 foot wind machines located on the high wind regions of the northern midwestern great plains. No radiation danger is involved, except maybe to construction and maintenance crews who forget their sunscreen.

Enough capacity to equal the present generating capacity of the US., 30,000 machines (generating 600,000 MW), all connected into an upgraded and extended national power grid, regulated by the government to prevent monopoly manipulation (as happened in California) or power blackouts... and maintain a fair, free market in electric power.This upgrade is sorely needed for energy security reasons anyway, look at the economic devestation of recent power blackouts from storms. Goverenment expenditure on a major public works project to acomplish this would save money from storm outages and increase economic growth. That is an investment, unlike the 500 billion claimed as the total cost of the Iraq War.

It would be a project on the scale of the Tennesse Valley Authority or the Hoover Dam projects in the depression era. A way to get the US manufacturing base back.

A comprehensive plan involving wind, solar, wave and tidal current, biofuel, and plugin hybrid vehicles would be affordable, eliminate imported oil, and revive the US economy providing good jobs for US familes.

Nuclear power is unsafe, way too expensive, and is another monopoly controlled source of power like oil, coal, and natural gas.

Coupled with nuclear fuel expected to triple in price over the next few years, and the fact that wind and solar have no fuel or waste costs...this illuminates the real bottomline of energy policy.

Shouldn't the profits earned on products and services sold to american consumers support US jobs? Or should capital be free to roam at will over the globe to find labor willing to work for the lowest wages?

Shouldn't government of, by, and for we the people instead encourage capital acumulated by profiting from US consumers to be invested in the US economy?

Why give tax breaks to the oil industry for instance..in order to export over 500 million dollars per day of US capital to pay for imported oil?

Why not adopt a tax policy and energy policy for US government needs that instead encourages clean, domestic, renewable energy production and manufacturing of wind, solar, hybrid vehicles, and biofuel plants to replace imported oil? Invest in these systems to provide energy for government use, and the mass production involved would lower costs bringing in power companies to invest the vast majority of capital. Local power companies would own these large scale wind machines and the power would run along the grid back to their area.

These changes are necessary to preserve real competitive capitalism once again. Multi-national corporate power has created energy monopolies that prevent the introduction of cleaner, more competitive technologies in the energy business.

Now this is a hard thing to pin down.
If Yucca Mountain works how much will it cost? 50 billion to store 70,000 metric tons of high level waste? How much to transport the waste?
10,000 dollars per metric ton? How much to moniter, maintain, and repair Yucca for 20,000 years. 200 million per year?
Nuclear power consumers contributed 20 billion or so into a fund to handle the waste problem, but that is now being used to pay for temporary storage in used nuclear fuel rod pools.
Yucca mountain appears to be unsafe as a permanent site, will a second or third site be needed, at a cost of say 100 billion per site?
Add on another 400 million per storage site for managment for 20,000 years?
It's a bonanza for the nuclear contracting business, but how will US taxpayers ever afford it? will that nuclear power end up costing 1 dollar, 2, 3, 4 ..or more per kwh by the time the final bills are payed?
Will it leak and contaminate half of the US sometine during transport, processing, or storage? what will that cost? Why find out?

I am surprised that this proposal does not include purchase of wind, solar, hybrid plugin vehicles, and biofuel for federal, state, and local government use.
Government vehicles are replaced as they age, why not negotiate large orders of hybrid plugin vehicles with US automakers for this purpose? Orders that allow wholesale pricing and economies of scale to equalize purchase prices of this oil and money saving technology with regular vehicles.
And incentives for local and state governments to favor these purchases with federal rebates...similar to the rebates that auto makers use to drive sales.
With an upgrade and extension of the national power grid, government could also invest in wind and solar powered electricity to heat and cool it's facilities. Offices, military bases, schools...these needs amount to a signifigant portion of the energy used in the US. And could also foster economies of scale with large orders for this equipment.
Mass production and installation will bring the price down and allow these systems to compete.
If conventional automotive powerplants and utility generating equipment were produced as wind, solar, biofuel, and plugin hybrids are now, one at a time or at very low production levels,...we would most likely still be riding horses and driving buggies.

And it would allow government to foster the manufacture of solar, wind, hybrid vehicles, and biofuel plants to meet it's own energy needs. As in WW 2 war production, government working with industry could win these oil wars.
But this time with 10s of thousands of wind, solar, and biofuel plants and millions of hybrid plugin vehicles...instead of millions of jeeps, trucks, planes, ships, guns, bombs...

A quick check of the annual average windspeed map shows that the nearly deserted region in the middle of the northern midwestern great plains is the best area for huge wind machines.

And hardly anyone will see them. The economy of scale, mass production and installation, and lack of objection to siting will more than make up for transportation losses of the power to where it is needed. In the same way that hydroelectric power from Canada is transported ..on low loss 500 kvdc lines.

I am not opposed to smaller local machines, and even small scale home units are economically viable over decades long energy savings for homeowners.

But the thing about these huge 1000 foot machines is that the power generated could come in at 2 cents per kwh independent of fuel costs, there are none for wind power.

The 500 foot blades move slowly compared to the flight of birds, and can even be padded to further reduce bird kills. A slight loss of efficiency to save birds is not a problem on this scale in the very high average wind areas.
If capital were allocated to upgrade and extend the national power grid and create a fair market in electric power that couldn't be manipulated by monopolists, the majority of power could come from these huge machines in remote sites, no more NIMBY.

For local machines where noise, bird kills, and unsightliness are prime concerns, vertical axis designs that are 2 to 3 times wider than they are high maybe the answer. The blades move slower, they are less visible, and they get around local tower height restrictions.

Enough power can still be provided even in fairly low average wind areas to power small buinesses, farms, and homes economically. The cost structure for these local machines needs to favor the investor a bit more and the power company a bit less and these applications would take off.

Once we go full speed ahead to wind, solar, hybrid plugin vehicles, and biofuel..China will be straining to catch up and get ahead as with every other technology we have pioneered.

No way to prove that, but that is my feeling. I believe that renewables not only have the clear enviromental advantage over fossil and nukes, but also the clear advantage economically.

With wind power on a 1000 foot scale, the limit of tower height due to aviation, the cost could be half that of nuclear for installation and total cost per kwh will dip below 3.5 cents towards 2 cents.

This is due to economies of scale, mass production and installation, and the higher average wind speeds at the higher altitude above ground level. Also the average wind speed is up to double that in your backyard, in the high wind speed areas of the northern great plains and other favorable regions for wind.

The amount of power available from the wind rises with the cube of the wind speed. And the largest wind machines now are the 300+ foot diameter GE 3.6 megawatt machines. 3 times that size yeilds 9 times the power.

1.5 times the windspeed, a conservative estimate for these taller machines, yeilds 3 times the power.
So it is actually a fairly conservative estimate to put the output of these larger machines at 14 times the 1.4 megawatt equivalent continuous generating capacity of the of the 3.6 megawatt GE machines (40% of continuous generation due to wind variability).

This rates the 1000 foot scale machines at a conservative 20 megawatt equivalent continuous generating capacity without even factoring in the higher wind speeds on the northern great plains.

Will engineers in China and India notice these factors that US politicians ignore? I suspect they already have.
Now to enlighten the people and the clumsy apparatus that controls capital investment in the US and the rest of the world.

Nuclear power versus wind?

That is uninsurable risk. How could the value of whole regions like this ever be calculated, much less insured? Radioactive waste is seeping through groundwater from Hanford right this very moment.

As Helen Caldicott stated in the Grist interview, 20 to 30 tons of nuclear waste are created each year by each nuclear plant. That waste must be stored for over 50,000 years. How can the cost of that even be comprehended?

Much less the risk involved. Will the waste be handled like it is at Rocky Flats, Hanford, Oak Ridge...or the hundreds of other leaking nuclear sites?

Will it be handled as well as the used nuclear fuel rods in those 68 storage pools around the country? A recent government study found that 8 times the radiation of Chernobyl could be released in an incident where the water was simply removed from ONE of these pools!

The fact is that wind power is already 3.5 cents per kwh in the larger machines installed in high wind speed areas like the northern great plains. It is a practical solution that can restore the US manufacturing base.

No waste, no fuel! The cost of nuclear fuel is being touted by wall street "investment" weasels right now...to triple in the next few years.

You are the one who is proposing "unworkable solutions"...that have been proven to be catastrophically unworkable for decades, by incidents like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl...and the leaking nuclear facilities all over the world.

And now we have terrorism added into the mix? Wake up and smell the toxic radioactive metal. Like the smell reported by the victims of Chernobyl.

Calculation yields the conclusion that a total of 20% of oil is used to provide refining energy.
Of course my conclusion is that wind and solar powered refining would cut oil consumption by 20%. Even the short term dirty solution of using coal for refinery heat would yield these savings!

What is wrong with my figures? Anyone? If this is true, I believe we have a major issue here to push reform forward.

A 20% drop in oil consumption would provide a lot of econonmic leverage that could give breathing room to get green transportation energy solutions off the ground.

Just removing the water from one of these pools will create a huge nuclear conflagration! With up to 8 times the radiation released at Chernobyl!

This problem must be addressed before any new nuclear plants are built. The cost of dealing with that waste, for 50,000 years is a hidden cost of nukes that make wind, solar, and biofuel more than cost competitive.

There are 68 of these sites around the US, and 100s more where nuclear waste is spreading at exponential rates into rivers, groundwater, and air.

Since we are in favor of choice above all else, we could bring real choice for women unable to care for a child for financial or other reasons...who can't reconcile abortion as a personal choice ...by providing government services to support that decision by these women.

Guaranteed safe timely adoption and financial support, so that women are not forced by circumstance to have an abortion against their personal choice.

Hillary has talked about it...I think it's a political position that will swing the moderate voters back to our side.

We do a Rove back on 'em, use their own wedge issue to give them the ultimate political wedgie. Hehehey.

This whole conversion will take substantial investment of course. But that investment will yield stable energy prices independent of rising fuel costs, including nuclear. And nuclear waste storage costs are the proverbial crazy aunt hidden in the attic.

What will the investment be on the part of government? A fraction of what has already been spent on oil wars (100's of billions), the economic devestation from oil wars and terror (trillions), and the coming economic devestation from fossil fuel generated CO2 related global climate change and increased volatility.

How much will it cost to build seawalls or move whole cities as ocean levels rise and storms become more and more violent? how much for the US? How much worldwide?

The refining part of the energy equation is a means of mass energy storage. When excess wind power is available refine more fuel. Plugin hybrid vehicles also store a huge amount of wind electric power.

Almost no absolutely fixed load exists in the entire grid. It is mainly variable. And wind or solar volatility over one machine in one location is no measure of wind electric availability over an entire grid covering the north american continent. And this is without adding the other huge source, wave and ocean current power into the whole scheme. Will the wind and waves and solar power ever stop simultaneously continent wide?

Doubtful. But of course the old fossil fuel grid exists as backup for the entire system. This whole plan would need an upgrade of the national power grid and extension into the high wind and solar areas of the northern great plains in the US and Canada. I am also including square miles of solar cogeneration over parking lots, on rooftops, and over farming operations in the desert areas of the US. Solar cogeneration that provides desalinization and water recycling, solar heating and cooling capacity,biofuel in the form of methane and hydrogen, and solar electric power.

And the holy grail of renewable energy? Superconducting electric power storage rings to even out the power fluctuations in the national grid.

But as you say...let's get to that 20% figure as soon as possible while the best solutions to energy storage are discovered. I like the thermal mass idea for residential and commercial heating and cooling. Heat storage phase change salt solutions are already practical for this use, and of course just the installation of radiant heating/cooling in cement structures of new and existing buildings is also a viable solution that saves energy immediately no matter the source.

We have lost following the GOP lead. More money did not equal victory. In taking donations we have abandoned our principles...the one advantage we have.

The GOP revels in corporate corruption, their position is that government is a hindrance to progress, and that only corporations work. They claim that unlimited corporate power is what makes the US strong. And take 'contributions" (bribes) freely, they fight reform at every turn,claoming more unlimited corporate power means a stronger america.

My idea is to follow the Dean campaign. As you point out, plenty of volunteers are out there, volunteers who are young, idealistic, and internet savvy.

The only way to wrest control of the party from corporate shills is to go cold turkey on campaign "contributions" from corporate sources.

Conduct a free campaign over the net, no TV ads. Make a point of telling people who wish to contribute to send their dollars to their favorite charity in the name of the campaign.

Put up a real reform platform, instead of a series of bland statements meant to appeal for corporate money. A reform agenda that addresses problems with actual solutions.

Have candidates who go on bicycle tours with biodiesel vans that follow them, have them camp out in local supporter's back yards, instead of staying in hotels. Rely on media coverage instead of TV ads. And get the message out over the free internet using volunteers.

Use individual donations to campaign via direct mail. Those costs are very low compared to results.
Corporate media, and corporate "donations" go hand in hand to disenfranchise voters. They simply do not care to vote given the lying garbage in campaigning as usual.

We need a re-evolution. Back to real grass roots politics. All politics is local.

So you figure private industry could have won WW 2 without government?

We are in a series of energy/oil wars here. Ever increasing and intensifying as oil soars to 100 bucks per barrel. It is bankrupting our government and killing our economy.

I only propose that government fund a small fraction of the cost of conversion from fossil and nuclear power to solar and wind. For the most part, private industry would build the devices and maintain them, and also invest 90% of the capital.

But as in WW 2 government must ride herd over monopolists who would take advantage...just as with the problem of war profiteering in WW 2.

I only propose that government purchase enough of these energy devices to conduct their own operations. Power military bases, vehicles for employee use, heat and cool government buildings..that sort of thing.

Those contracts, negotiated with the same sort of urgency as war production contracts during WW2, will ramp up mass production, and economies of scale for these technologies.

The present political/corporate monopoly behind fossil and nuclear power that gives huge subsidies is what is preventing the build out of green energy systems.

This needs to be reversed. Taxes on fossil and nuclear power that reflect the true cost of emissions, waste, and these never ending energy/oil wars need to be instituted to fund the conversion to clean, renewable energy.

Remember the story of the jeep and the liberty ships? Check your history to get an understanding of the government actions necessary to win these energy/oil wars....without a military effort, but rather...a manufacturing effort.

Government involvment in clean, safe energy is much preferable to the horrors of pollution created by nuclear contractors and fossil fuel industry corporate monopolists bribing government officials like the bushco crew.

Radiation and toxic heavy metals like mercury are leaking out at exponential rates into air and groundwater from the thousands of toxic waste sites, refineries,power plants, mines, highways, ports, pipelines...all necessary for fossil and nuclear power.

No pollution from waste and emissions need be created with wind and solar power solutions.

The lack of those very high cost problems make wind and solar the clear cost leaders in this battle, and without government subsidies to fossil and nuclear power, market forces will take over.

A 10 year 10 billion dollar per year government investment in tax incentives and the purchase of wind, solar, heat pump, and plugin hybrid vehicles to provide energy for it's operations would be appropriate.

A program like the TVA to upgrade and expand the national power grid into high wind and solar power resource regions to allow power companies all over to invest in installations in these areas and have the power transported back to their local customers.

This is a huge effort, and with the increased demand from government, all of these devices will be lower cost due to mass production and installation. Allowing consumers to buy hybrid plugin vehicles and local power companies to invest in wind and solar at ever lower costs.

3.5 cents per kwh is a very competitive price, especially since it is independent of rising fuel costs and costs for waste and emissions. The local power company here charges 7 cents per kwh retail ...allowing them to make a decent profit after paying their overhead.

The next step..from biofuel generators to hydrogen fuel cells.

Then eventually hydrogen fuel cells will replace even the biofuel generators in next generation plugin hybrids.

That puts hydrogen fuel cells as an add on to these plugin hybrids. Progress in steps. Much more economical to fund as it evolves than a complete switch over.

Hydrogen has expensive hurdles to overcome, but plugin hybrids are ready now. When the fuel cells are cost effective ..it's plug and drive!

In cities with hilly terrain a system of escalators that people can ride uphill with their bicycles, roller blades, skateboards..would provide green transportation similar to the way a downhill ski resort works.

A wind electric powered escalator lifts you up the hill...you ride, glide down the hills to your destination, strategically taking different escalators around the city scape.

A real urban planning design challenge, one that many designers would relish!

Plugin hybrids are the answer, a plugin battery pack added to a hybrid extends the electric power only range.

It can get you over 100 mpg on short trips..under 70 miles between charging stations. As battery techology increases and costs decrease due to mass production, hybrids with small biofueled generators replacing the gasoline engine in the hybrid will be possible.

Lot's of bike trails and lanes, electric powered public transportation that allows bicycles to be carried on board, trains, buses, and local loop vans ...

...Will all do a lot to solve the huge transportation inefficiency involved in one SUV per passenger commuting.

The space taken up by mining, refining, nuclear power plants themselves, waste disposal...and the huge plume of leakage into groundwater and air from the thousands of nuclear contamination sites like Rocky Flats, Hanford, Oak Ridge, Chernobyl..and on and on around the globe is orders of magnitude greater than the space necessary to provide clean, fuel-less, low cost, stabley priced wind electric power.

A 4 megawatt wind plant requires a 50 foot diameter space on the mostly deserted northern great plains.The 100s of thousands of these machines necessary to replace fossil fuel and nuclear power generation, will still only take up a tiny fraction of the space devoted to and polluted by the alternatives.

Even square miles of raised solar cogeneration panels in the desert southwest, mounted on roofs, over parking lots, and over farming operations that need shade under desert conditions, reuse space that has already been committed to development.

These solar cogeneration facilities can provide waste water recycling, water desalinization, biofuel, and electricity for the grid. The desert southwest is facing vast water shortages. these solar installations will solve that problem.These technologies DO compete in cost with any other power source, considering the total cost involved in fuel, waste disposal, uninsurable risk, construction costs...all subsidized by the government for fossil fuel and nuclear plants.

With megawatt installatiuons in high wind areas like the northern plains wind power is 3.5 cents per kwh. And that cost is a stable one, not dependent on spiraling fuel costs.

Nuclear power, revive it or let it fade?

Were the costs involved with nuclear power included in the power bill to consumers, instead of being absorbed by taxpayers using deficit spending, it would be apparent to all that wind, solar, heat pumps,and plugin hybrid technology all together reduce energy costs to a fraction of that of nuclear power.

Global climate disaster cannot be practically avoided with nuclear power. The lack of any possibley affordable insurance of nuclear accidents or intentional mishandling of nuclear waste makes siting new plants impossible. Not in my back yard...is as reasonable argument in the case of nuclear power, the mines, mills, plants, and waste facilities have been operated with corporate/government fraud on a massive scale in the past. Continuing into the future.

Yucca Mountain proves that. Recent evelations by scientists who quit their jobs so they could get around government gag orders to expose the continuing corruption make that clear.

If this were a case of either nukes or global climate disaster this might alter the picture. That is a false dilemna though.

100s of thousands of megawatt wind and solar plants, biofuel plants, and millions of hybrid plugin vehicles, solar heating systems,and heat pumps, are the alternative. All built in US factories, thus reviving the manufacturing base and the good jobs that come with it ...are the answer.

Waste and pollution from coal, oil, and nuclear powerplants, vehicles, refineries, mines, highways, pipelines, ports...spreads at an exponential rate into air, lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater. Areas like Hanford, Rocky Flats, Chernobyl prove that the costs asociated with these problems are incalculable. How much is the Columbia River Basin worth for instance?

How could the replacement value of whole regions, like that around Chernobyl even be calculated? It's impossible. We already have cost effective solutions.

The way to win these energy wars is with a massive production effort, like the war production of WW 2, but with wind, solar, hybrids, heat pumps ...instead of the tanks, ships, planes, bombs, guns, used to win WW 2. Government leading and watching over corporate corruption..just as it did during WW 2.

This time with a 10 year, 10 billion dollar per year investment in extending and upgrading the power grid into high wind and solar potential regions like the northern great plains and the desert southwest. And in purchasing wind and solar plants, hybrid plugin vehicles, heat pumps, and biofuel plants to satify government energy needs.

This in turn provides a mass market for these products, allowing industry to engage economies of scale that come from mass production. Lowering the cost for all sectors of the economy to buy into these alternatives..from homeowners all the way up to huge power companies.

The Daily Show had a short clip from a 1930s government film about social security refering to it as insurance against poverty in old age.

Just as I suspected, that was the original intent and the only way that it makes sense culturally and financially.

The Cape Cod wind farm controversey is unecessary.

It plays into the hands of Bush administration corporate political opposition to wind, solar, biofuel, and hybrid plugin alternatives to oil and other fossil fuels profferred by multinational corporate monopolists.

The 100s of thousands of megawatt wind machines needed to replace fossil fuel use are better located on the northern midwestern great plains.

In the northern US and Canada. The wind resources available in that region, combined with the isolation from human habitation make it perfect.

Billion dollar tourist destinations like the Cape Cod seashore are not worth battling over for the paltry percentage of power use that they provide.

Wave power and ocean and tidal current generators along the coastlines are less obtrusive and can provide equivalent power to the Cape Cod installation with a much smaller public profile.

When one is talking about wind, solar, biofuel, and hybrid vehicles as a way to win these oil wars, it is worse than foolish to waste time and money trying to locate wind power in places like Cape Cod.

Some here have mentioned bird kills from wind. With the huge blades of multi-megawatt machines possible on the great plains away from complaining eyes, the blades move slowly and do not kill birds like the smaller, faster rotating machines do.

Of course birds crash into all kinds of stationary objects and are killed, this can't be helped. With these huge machines the blades move so slowly compared to the velocity that birds fly at, that they are virtually stationary from the avian point of view.

Also padding or netting, to further protect birds, will not materially effect the efficiency of these huge machines. The smaller machines are right on the edge of cost effectiveness so need to be as efficient as possible.

Economies of scale, height, greater windspeed....with the wind plants on the isolated plains region all make a few percentage points of efficiency lost to bird safety insignifigant.

The amount of power collected goes up with the cube of windspeed, the square of wind rotor diameter, and windspeed increases rapidly with height above the ground. All factors favoring these larger, remote, northern plains sited machines. The added efficiency of mass production and installation on the northern great plains gives this proposal a huge cost advantage over individual and smaller instalations.

And remember the best part of wind and solar, no fuel costs or waste disposal costs as with nuclear or fossil power plants. Fuel costs rise with the whim of monopolies like OPEC and multinational oil corporations, spriraling up into the stratosphere with war and terror.

Maintenance, insurance, and depreciation are the costs involved with wind and solar. All low cost stable factors, easily managed with long term loans and steady income from power production.

A much better, more stable energy basis for our economy than that provided by nations like Saudi Arabi, Iran, Iraq, Russia......and on and on ...oily dictatorships run by corporate criminals.

The president mentioned "irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims." in his state of the union speech.

Why did he single out "asbestos claims"? And in the state of the union speech of all places?

Because mesothelioma lawsuits are a huge drain on Halliburton specifically.

Is it nerve or ignorance, or maybe a slip of the tongue that made Bush specifically insert this corruption on the part of this administration right into his speech?

Although Ms. Smith will probably donate the reward to charity anyway, it's a matter of great importance that she receive that reward. How many people actually believe that any reward offered by authorities is ever payed?

I have never heard of even one case where the powers that make these offers don't weasel out on them.

The Noble Peace Prize for proving that empathy really works, even in a worst case scenario, ought to be considered too.

Her words and actions need to be highlighted. It's great to see that she, temporarily at least, eclipsed coverage of Michael Jackson and other tabloid teeeveee faithbased revenge pablum for the sheople.

This writer forgot the most important factor in this phenomenon of the "strategic corporal".

The higher ups who carefully encourage these policies, without direct and clear commands, get off scott free.

It is clear that this writer's techniqes would save lives were they made the norm, the reason the leadership does not institutionalize them is that then, when mistakes happened, the leaders would be held responsible.

This is a rotten situation to place US soldiers in, and a terrible hindrance to the establishment of peace, order, and freedom in Iraq.

Toyota has the lead on hybrids. The Toyota trucks and SUVs are exceeding the big three's quality, and now durability as well. With hybrid powerplants there's no contest.

This is why the US government needs to institute a vehicle replacement program to jumpstart the mass production of plugin hybrids. Economy of scale would bring the cost of hybrid plugin powerplants down, and with the fuel savings make them competitive with infernal combustion power.

Revive US manufacturing before it's too late.
